mumblemumblemumblegripe. Datum is singular. Data is plural!

Yes, but our "beloved" head of QA says that we can think of it as a collective noun and type is instead of are.

Actually, I probably should not get started on the whole subject; I just get really cranky. Even crankier than a normally am.

I agree... BUT look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data#Usage_in_English

I hadn't realised that this was anything more than the educated vs the clearly ignorant. :)
